His personal motto, which he described to the Buffalo Evening News in 1976, was "to be what I am to the fullest: Black to the fullest, a musician to the fullest, and a homosexual to the fullest." But as his personality blossomed, he became the charismatic, uncompromising artist that many who knew him remember. Known for his singular compositions, Julius Eastman was also a gifted vocalist, dancer and conductor.Įarly on, Eastman was characterized as shy, with few friends. Eastman would have many opportunities to perform his music there over the years, and would eventually teach at the university beginning in 1970. His collaborators included John Cage, Morton Feldman and, importantly, Lukas Foss - who, in his position at the State University of New York at Buffalo, presided over the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts, a hothouse of experimental music. In the years that followed, Eastman would breach the boundaries of the classical avant-garde, a white and Eurocentric club then and now. But we do know that in December 1966 he made his New York debut as a soloist at Town Hall, with a program that mostly featured his own compositions. The details of his life in the years right after college are sketchier according to Gay Guerrilla: Julius Eastman and his Music, a 2015 book co-edited by Renée Levine Packer and Mary Jane Leach, and still the most authoritative text on the composer. It's perhaps a foreshadowing of the religious pieces - One God, Buddha and Our Father - that the artist would write near the end of his short and tumultuous life.Įastman's career began auspiciously at the Curtis institute, where he studied with revered pianist Mieczyslaw Horoszowski at age 19, and played only his own works at his graduation recital in 1963. Near the end of Femenine comes a characteristic Eastman curveball: From the depths of the roiling ensemble, the hymn tune "Be Thou My Vision" rises momentarily. "Most classical players don't grow up improvising, but most of the players in Wild Up are composers and improvisers as well." Along the way, solos pop up for piano, cello, baritone saxophone, flugelhorn and even vocalists - a nod to Eastman's gifts as a singer, which earned him a 1974 Grammy nomination for his arresting performance of Eight Songs for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies. "The biggest liberty is the inclusion of a dozen or so long solos - all at architecturally significant moments in the piece," Rountree explains. In Wild Up's freewheeling performance, it sounds as fresh as ever: The group adds a few bells (literally) and whistles, both to Eastman's score and the example set by his own relaxed 1974 recording of the piece. I love that something so gargantuan, like Femenine, can come from something so succinct."Ĭomposed in a minimalist style for winds, marimba, vibraphone, sleigh bells, piano and bass, Femenine was prescient for its day, premiering some two years before Steve Reich's lauded Music for 18 Musicians. "And one that, maybe because of its brevity, encourages an amazing creative maelstrom. For Christopher Rountree, Wild Up's founder and artistic director, that made Femenine a kind of creative sandbox for the musicians to play in. His music was scattered to the winds.Įastman's score for the hour-plus piece is only five pages of manuscript, and the entire work is based around one melodic building block, a two-note theme in the vibraphone that emerges from a forest of bells. When he died in a Buffalo, N.Y., hospital in 1990, he was just 49 years old and alone. But in the 1980s, after he moved back to New York City, he began spiraling into unpredictable behavior and rumored addiction. He graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, collaborated with key musical figures like Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta, and taught at the University of Buffalo. Today he's a visionary to many, even if his insistence on incorporating racial slurs into his titles still ruffles feathers.īorn in Manhattan in 1940, Eastman was a precocious pianist, blessed with a commanding bass voice. ![]() But that confident self-awareness enabled Eastman to write music that was challenging, mischievously irreverent and sometimes ecstatic. To be proudly gay as a composer in the 1970s was brave enough to be Black and gay in that world, even more so. In a combustible career, the late composer swerved from critical acclaim to gate-crashing controversy, and from success to homelessness. ![]() There have been many misfits in classical music, but Julius Eastman stands tall among them. This is by no means an article to replace the states’ regulations but to give you an up-to-date directory on what is out there. One thing you can count on out west is no smokeless powder. Sweet, right? There are a lot of commonalities across the west where you can have a few different setups that allow you to hunt all states. Utah went from iron sight muzzleloaders to a virtually unlimited muzzleloader, but a few years later, they decided to open up HAMS hunts to allow traditional muzzleloader- only hunts to be a thing again. Eliminate mistakes by pre-assembling the rifle and reassembling it throughout the process of inletting the barrel, filing down the forend cap, if necessary, and installing the barrel furniture and the lock with care.In the ever-evolving hunting world, it seems weaponry is constantly changing. "Every mistake you make shows up on the target," as the old-timers say. Muzzleloaders can be quite accurate, but many are not. Final adjustments to fixed sights can be made with a brass drift and file. Shoot for accuracy on a bench with the rifle rested. ![]() Wipe the barrel with a patch between shots. Whether using a percussion gun or a flinter, experiment with different combinations to end up with a hunting charge of somewhere between 80 and 100 grains. For a flintlock, use FFFFg (a finer powder) to prime the pan. Start the ball down with a short starter rod, then finish with the ramrod. 490, seats against the powder in a small patch cut at the muzzle. 50-caliber muzzleloader for the first time, I tend toward a load of 80 grains of FFFg blackpowder (or a substitute like Triple Seven or Pyrodex) and a patched round ball. A new builder should consider them all, but there is no one "right" way to finish a barrel. Self-proclaimed experts pontificate about which techniques are historically accurate and which are not, and how to achieve the best blue or the best brown. There are a lot of opinions on the muzzleloading forums. Depending on the build and the desired effect, a person might opt for a cold blue or a plum brown. Guns were built to order, and a buyer might opt to leave a barrel "in the white" to cut costs. In the old days, barrels were protected with bluing or browning processes according to the fashion of the era and the whim of the builder. (Photo by Gary Lewis) BLUING OR BROWNING? Before you begin the build, inspect all parts and pre-assemble the rifle to get a sense of the work ahead. Remove wood from the barrel channel and at the breech. Grind the forend of the trigger guard to fit it to the channel. Do this with a notebook at hand and write down the necessary steps in order: Fit the lock to the stock with chisels. Most kits come with the wood 95 percent inlet, so the parts are not going to fit perfectly, but a pre-assembly shows the work required. ![]() When the kit arrives, the first thing to do is open the box, remove all the parts and roughly pre-assemble the rifle. With a 33 1/2-inch barrel, it weighs just 6 pounds, 9 ounces. I chose a flintlock so that it could be used in any state, and while purists might be quick to point out that it differs from true Kentucky rifles, in my mind it’s a great mountain rifle–light, short and nimble. With some basic tools and woodworking skills, you can start building a muzzleloader now and complete it in time for most Western blackpowder seasons.įor this build, I chose Traditions’ Kentucky Rifle Kit (.50-caliber flintlock), ordered from. ![]() That’s usually set at 60,000 to 100,000-mile intervals. The first thing to should mention about water pumps is that they have a set service schedule in most cars. And after adding coolant, it’s a good idea to bleed the cooling system because it’s almost guaranteed that low coolant has created air pockets in the system. To solve this problem, I suggest you check your owner’s manual to see what type of coolant your car needs and buy it pre-mixed so you don’t have to worry about ratios and freezing points. Since replacing the head gasket is a four-digit repair, do whatever you can to avoid that. That can lead to overheating, and if an air pocket is made near the cylinder head, it can destroy the head gasket and warp the cylinder head. Naturally, the air that’s forced into the coolant creates foam and lowers its cooling properties. But if the coolant level drops below the minimum, the water pump may start drawing air under specific conditions. ![]() The reservoir is marked with minimum and maximum, and as long as the coolant level is between those lines, it’s good. The coolant measure in most cars is on the side of the expansion tank, also called the coolant reservoir. And after diluting it, it’s a good idea to bleed the system. Alternatively, you can use something like a turkey baster to draw coolant out of the expansion tank. You can get them for about $15 or even less.Īnd if it turns out the antifreeze concentration is high, the only solution is to drain a certain amount and add distilled water to dilute it. To check if that’s the case in your car, get yourself an antifreeze tester. That range depends on the car and the coolant, but anything over a ratio of 50:50 is overkill in most cases as it lowers the freezing temperature to -35C or more. But keep in mind that the coolant concentration has to be significantly higher than what’s allowed by the manufacturer. If you go over that range, the detergents and emulsifiers in the coolant will start to foam. Each type of coolant has a concentration or ratio range within which it works properly. The higher the coolant concentration, the lower its freezing point will be, so you might think that the more coolant there is in a system, the better it will be.īut too much coolant is also bad. High Coolant ConcentrationĪll vehicle cooling systems run on a mix of a specific coolant and distilled water. On the more expensive side, it could be a blown head gasket or a bad water pump. The simple causes of coolant foaming include a high coolant concentration, low coolant, wrong type of coolant, and air trapped in the system. That’s why any problems associated with it should not be taken lightly, especially since a lot of them, including foaming, can be solved pretty easily and for not a lot of money. A faulty cooling system is the number one killer of engines. ![]() For the first time, manage your off days and earn bonus content through connections, endorsements and a live practice environment.Ī groundbreaking new mode featuring fully customizable teams and 5v5 tournaments livestreamed on NBA 2KTV.
